“Mendenhall Glacier - Before the lake, at a pond, the temperatures
were just above freezing; appeared a cross country skier’s delight.
Tlingit name is Aak’wtaaksit (”the Glacier Behind the Little Lake”).”

John Muir Cabin Trail Above 1200 Feet, Juneau, AK

Well with the Solar minimum upon us and record snowfall all over the Globe. I thought it appropriate to show some Winter shots from Alaska. This Photograph comes from our friend Sharon W Zuboff in Juneau, Alaska. When I was there in 2006 she was our guide on many an Alaskan adventure. here is her field notes from this photo:

“John Muir. Above 1200 feet, snow covered pine’s (ancient trees), above Stephens Passage (body of water below). Although broken snow fall records, we managed to climb all winter without snow shoes. John Muir Cabin trail is located 13 miles northwest of Juneau near Auke Bay, a subalpine meadow terrain 1550 feet above the Mendenhall Valley.”

All Walks of Ships - NOAA Research, Coast Guard and Cruise Ships - Juneau, AK

Ahh, Twilight in Juneau, Alaska. What a treat for the eyes. Everything has That Purply Hue for hours here. It’s a Twilight Photographer’s dream location and it seems like every kind of Ship stops in the port of Juneau, Sooner or later.

On This night, 5/29/06, I caught a NOAA research vessel doing a port of Call. The Coast Guard Cutter next to it is a regular, as is The Radiance of the Seas right behind them. In the far left is the Vendam which always was the first to leave port. In The background is Douglas Island’s Mountains…

Lone Cabin - near Old Cannery, Hood Bay, Alaska

Our man in Juneau, AK, Robert J Maass is back in action. He writes in his Log:

Jerry Just got back from most amazing expedition to Admiralty island 10 days of Hunting fishing and taking pictures ,wait till you see a place called Hood Bay you will not believe. This is a cabin left from old cannery built right in Tongass National Forest. The most amazing forest in this area. Lots of Virgin Forest for hundreds of miles. Creeks and rivers every 8th mile.

A lot of people think you can’t enjoy Alaska in winter. I beg to differ! Alaska’s Southeast interior, the Chatham Straits very habitable in January. In the 30s the whole time. When we were there it was a bit of a warm spell, notice the ice still on the water.

Robert sent me a half dozen of his favorite photographs from his latest trip. I will feature them over the next week or so…

Good Morning Sunshine on the Mt Jumbo Trail, Douglas Island.

The Mount Jumbo trail is very tough hike (Almost Climbing), it’s almost straight up the side of the mountain with many obstacles and mud holes to traverse. It’s worth it to the hardy, it is breath taking, gorgeous, with forest cathedrals, mountain meadows and spectacular views. It’s just .25 miles from Rob’s House. This Sunrise Hike was the toughest he ever attempted.
The trail is 5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 3300 plus feet.

When He got to the top, it was foggy and this awesome god light was passing Through the trees…

Sunrise Reflection at Mendenhall Lake

So Far on my Blog, I have mixed up the Photo’s I’m featuring. I have decided to do a series of Photographs with a common theme for a while.

My first series is Fog. Fog by definition is a cloud in contact with the ground and which reduces visibility to less than 1 km.

When I was in Alaska, I never saw a place with more Fog. It’s a Fog Photographers Dream Place. My Mom and My Friend Rob are Fog fanatics, myself a newbie. I will mix up shots from all of us. I hope you will enjoy them.

Today’s fog shot is from Juneau, Alaska. Taken by Rob over the summer. This shot was taken at 6:30am right at Sunrise in front of the Mendenhall Glacier. I guess lots of Ice / Summer can equal great fog. I think it may be his best Photograph ever…

The Mendenhall Glacier in March

There are many things in the natural world that inspire Awe in the Hearts of man.
The Mendenhall Glacier is one of them. The immenseness, The Deep Blues in that
really Old Pure Water touch you more than words can possibly describe.
A Must see when your visiting Juneau.
